Author Steven Mohan Jr. passed away Tuesday, Oct. 23 following an illness, according to his colleagues. His age and cause of death were not immediately known.

Mohan is best remembered by BattleTech fans as the author of the 2010 novel A Bonfire of Worlds, the first fiction work to advance the BattleTech universe storyline following the end of the MechWarrior: Dark Age series. He also penned Isle of the Blessed, a serialized novel set during the Jihad Era.

“All of us at Catalyst were stunned and saddened to hear of Steve’s passing,” said John Helfers, Catalyst Game Labs Executive Editor. “He was a true fan of BattleTech, and wrote some of the most powerful BattleTech stories ever published. He will be greatly missed by all of us.”

A prolific contributor to the BattleCorps fiction platform, Mohan wrote more than 45 pieces of fiction to the BattleTech universe in all.

Catalyst Game Labs Owner and CEO Loren L. Coleman shared the following remembrance of Mohan:

“I have had friends pass. I don’t always feel called upon to share. But I do for my friend Steve Mohan. Steve had a way of getting into your heart. He was a kind, beautiful, gentle, creative amazing man.

I met Steve two decades ago at a writing workshop where I was assisting and got to know him very well. He was a dedicated writer, always intent on learning and getting better. And he did. Every story, every novel, every year. It was my privilege to publish Steve as a BattleTech short story writer, and then a novelist.

I was fortunate enough to see Steve only a few months ago. Of course it was at another writing workshop. He let me know about his health, but that he was feeling better. When we hugged goodbye, the last thing Steve said to me was, ‘please get back to writing fiction. I’m still a fan of yours and I want to read more of your work.’

That was Steve. Always outward focused.

I’ll miss him.”
