The Master Unit List is the official record of every unit in BattleTech — every ’Mech, tank, fighter, infantry squad, DropShip and WarShip that has appeared in a published product. For each one it holds the game statistics you need at the table, which factions fielded it, and when.
It exists so that a question with a real answer has one place to look it up.
Where It Came From
The Master Unit List was never a company project. It was built by BattleTech’s own volunteers — freelancers and contributors to the game — in their own time, out of love for it, and to give the player community something it genuinely needed.
George Blouin Jr built and hosted the original Master Unit List site, keeping it running, current and free for everyone who played. What began as a way to answer “could this faction field that unit in that era?” became the reference the whole community reached for — used at kitchen tables, in tournaments, and by the people writing the game itself.
He did that for years, at his own expense, because the game deserved it.
Catalyst Game Labs is grateful, and says so plainly: this site exists because George built the first one. Everything here — the era structure, the availability model, the idea that a unit’s history matters as much as its stats — comes from work he first developed.
And Everyone Who Built It With Him
The Master Unit List was compiled, corrected and argued over by volunteers across many, many years, on the forums, Discord, and countless emails — people who write for BattleTech, volunteer for it, develop it, and play it, doing this on top of everything else because they loved the game and wanted players to have this type of tool at their table.
Players sent corrections and additions through the official forums and elsewhere; CDT agents and others contributed errata after errata whenever someone noticed something was wrong. But the compiling, the research and the judgement calls — deciding what was right when the sources disagreed — were made by the people below, over and over, without fanfare.
We’d also like to mention Jeffrey Gordon, who assisted in the original data transfer of the MUL, but sadly, passed away before the start of this project.
All of it carried forward into this site. Every availability entry, every corrected introduction year, every unit somebody noticed was missing: it is still here, and it is the foundation this version was built on rather than a starting point it replaced.
On behalf of Catalyst Game Labs, thank you.
