Mercenary

For a thousand years, mercenaries have been the sharpest — and most unpredictable — instrument of war in the Inner Sphere: hired guns whose loyalty follows the contract and whose skill can decide a campaign. From a lone lance to a brigade-sized command, the mercenary trade is where the BattleTech universe hands you the pen to write your own legend.

Mercenaries are woven into the fabric of every era of BattleTech history. When the Star League fell and the Successor States bled themselves white across the Succession Wars, hired MechWarrior commands became the swing factor no House lord could do without — bought, bonded, and sometimes betrayed on battlefields from the Periphery to Terra. The trade grew its own institutions: the hiring halls of Galatea, “the Mercenary’s Star,” and later the great market on Outreach, where Wolf’s Dragoons built the Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission (MRBC) to police contracts, ratings, and pay. A general mercenary command is the everyman of that world — not a famous name like the Kell Hounds or the Gray Death Legion, but a working outfit fielding whatever its commander can buy, salvage, or scavenge: a mismatched lance of aging Wasps and hard-won Marauders, a DropShip full of hope, and a reputation earned one contract at a time. That is exactly the appeal. Free of any House’s restrictions or any Clan’s honor code, a mercenary force can field designs from every faction and every era side by side, take any job on any front, and live or die by salvage rights and its own good name. Mercenaries have toppled governments, held the line against the Clans, and vanished into the Periphery with a warlord’s ransom. To command a mercenary unit is to command the single most flexible force in the game — and the truest expression of the BattleTech player.

Why command A Mercenary

Because this is your unit. You pick the machines, negotiate the contracts, count the bills, weigh the salvage, and build a reputation from nothing — no faction dictating what you can field. For players who want total freedom, a personal narrative, and the classic build-your-own-command campaign at the heart of BattleTech, nothing else compares.

The BattleTech: Mercenaries boxed set is the ideal launch point, with Field Manual: Mercenaries, and the latest Hot Spots line detailing contracts, ratings, and unit-building rules; the Chaos Campaign system turns any collection into a living mercenary career. The Master Unit List builds a legal mercenary force from any faction’s designs, and Force Packs put a table-ready lance in your hands.
