Tech Rating/Availability: F/X-X-X-E
Cost: 3,224,531 C-bills

Selected as the AFFC's standard interceptor, the Sabre is based on records of the SLDF's SB-28 model provided by Wolf Dragoons and was developed jointly by Lockheed/CBM and Jalastar. The SB-28 was chosen as a starting point so that the Sabre could fill a similar role to the Seydlitz as well as the AFFS' Sparrowhawk, and the advanced fusion turbine freed up the needed tonnage for both Ramtech's extended range laser and for target acquisition gear that allows the fighter to spot for guided artillery where this is available. Ferro-aluminium armor significantly improves survivability, but pilots are reminded that the Sabre remains a light fighter and that they should aim to avoid taking heavy fire if at all possible since almost any weapon still has a chance of local penetration.

In the 26th century, Tengo Aerospace revised their established Lightning for House Liao, only to see the very similar Transit adopted and take over most of their contracts and suppliers. In response, Tengo illegally licensed out the Lightning to foreign firms, keeping themselves afloat although many executives paid the price.

In the 31st century, Tengo gambled on funding an updated Lightning once again. This time House Liao was more receptive... and more importantly, House Steiner-Davion had zero interest in seeing a new and advanced aerospace fighter production line sitting un-used or sold to foreigners. The Lightning wasn't part of AFFC planning but came at the perfect moment and was immediately licensed by HildCo Interplanetary and Lockheed/CBM with every production unit being snapped up by the AFFC for dispatch to forces facing the Clans.

Originally developed by the Free Worlds League, the Eagle is one of the most widespread heavy aerospace fighters in use in the Inner Sphere. With two factories, it was chosen as the AFFC's own preferred superiority fighter. The priority was survival and not only was the armor material improved, almost all of the weight freed up by the light-weight fusion turbine was allocated to keeping the Eagle in the fight. Copying the DCA's Slayer, fuel tanks were also expanded. Without any need for ammunition, the Eagle has unmatched endurance and durability in the Federated Commonwealth's aerospace arsenal.

The joke goes that the Lyrans wanted the AFFC to adopt the Chippewa as their primary attack fighter, the Davions preferred the Stuka and the AFFC compromised and picked the Thunderbird. A long established design, the Thunderbird had the advantage of being operated by both halves of the Federated Commonwealth (and even the Capellans had several). The design also shares a fusion turbine with the smaller Eagle, further easing logistics.

The development of the Thunderbird hasn't fully finished and the possibility of artemis-guided missiles or possibly TAG-guided to work with the Sabre is being looked at. The configuration is modelled on the SLDF D45 but with a huge heatsink capacity.

Man, there's a small but very vocal group who do not understand the purpose of having something that is this small and this high on the acceleration curve. They seem to believe no ASF should have less than 90 points of armor.

Overall, the designs feel quite 'samey' since they all focus on the use of the Clan ER large laser, with one exception.

The ERLL is the easiest to refit with, so it shouldn't be a surprise that it dominates the first generation.

And thanks Drakensis!  I'll look for that other thread to ask the mods to move my posts from the story thread to.

Red Pins

The new forum is trying its best to irritate me, eating my posts due to typos.

ok, final time; I offer my Thunderbird variant in the spirit of amusement and faction-baiting.  I suppose the Reflec armor and Ultras could go, making room for three Gauss Rifles, Heavy Gausses or a couple additional lasers for when the ammo runs out.

Intended to escort and attack DropShips.

A swing at a Lucifer Brick (R20 variant) with new goodies to improve its DropShip killing abilities (nearly twice the firepower, Extreme range, and almost twice the legs).  I almost went with paired ER PPCs, but then realized ER Larges have longer range to kite DropShips:

Developed as part of the post 4thSW rebuilding efforts the Stuka plant on Demeter was rebuilt near the original that had been destroyed during the 1stSW.

Armed with four of the new advanced ER Lasers and a single Gauss Rifle the new design was built around a brand new Light Fusion engine which freed up space for a ten ton fuel reserve and a staggering 24.5 tons of brand new Ferro-Aluminum armor.

The Stuka was developed to help fill the perceived gap between Assault Dropships and Warships, as such the model of the "over the horizon" carrier was used as inspiration.

By giving the fighters longer legs it was hoped that they could bring their firepower to bear on Warships that had historically been vulnerable to massed aerospace fighter attacks.

Lycomb in addition to developing this new version of the Stuka developed refit kits for the Union and Overlord to convert them into CV models similar to the popular Leopard CV.

Simulations have shown that a wing of the new Stuka Aerofighters could reliably engage and destroy a Vincent Corvette and its aerospace compliment.

With the updated Lightning and Hellcats becoming the AFFC's new centerpiece medium aerospace fighters, a secondary program was launched to refit existing Corsairs and Lucifers for the AFFS and LCAF, respectively. For the Corsair, the proposal involved using Axton Extraordinary 300 XLs from the Eagle and Thunderbird projects to give the Corsair performance comparable to interceptors. The heat exchangers were updated to double strength models, making use of bulkier SLDF-grade heat sinks and conserving the more compact Clan-grade for mechs. Protection was improved both in quality and quantity; over fourteen tons of new ferro-aluminum plating replacing the thirteen and a half tons of standard armor. The centerpiece of the reworked armament was two of the extended range Ramtech large lasers in the nose, with paired medium lasers in each wing. The rearfiring small lasers were removed, as simulations against Clan aerospace fighters indicated that armor breaches by small lasers were statistically unlikely even against the lightest warbirds in the Clan arsenal.

The program is currently stuck in development, as the airframe needs significant reinforcement to deal with the higher thrust of the new engine. This alone has made it logistically challenging to perform as engineers have yet to find a solution that does not involve a full teardown of each airframe.

An interim solution is looking more promising, keeping the original GM 200 engine but implementing all the other system upgrades.

Lockheed-CBM saw an opportunity with the sharing of technical expertise from the Wolf's Dragoons; bringing back the Rapier, still in limited production but falling short of its SLDF heights.

Lockheed-CBM reached out to Red Devil Industries, offering to split the costs of developing an extralight 340 rated engine that Red Devil could use on their Battlemaster.  Armor was increased dramatically, intending for the Rapier to outlast their opponents.  The PPCs were replaced with Johnston HIgh Speeds, and the assault autocannon upgraded to a gauss rifle. With enhanced lethality at longer ranges, the LRM was replaced with twin SRM-6 launchers linked to Artemis IV targeting systems. for close-in punch.

A pair of the new Rapiers are undergoing evaluation flights on Tharkad while Lockheed-CBM is looking to expand ferro-aluminum production, especially due to the requirements of the Eagle upgrade.

Since we have X-Pulse lasers, have a Centurion that has three of them.  Using the same 240 XL engine as the Hellcat, thickening the nose armor, and adding 3x medium X-pulse lasers, the design isn't exactly a slam dunk, but is a solid modernization.  However, since there's not exactly an infinate number of factories for the design, and expansion of heavier fighters has priority, the design is likely not going to set the galaxy on fire.

Developed by going through the SLS Alexander, the Aegis Class Heavy Cruiser assigned to the Wolf Dragoon reconnaissance mission, with a fine tooth comb.

The Aegis was selected over the Congress Class Beowulf and the Sovetskii Soyuz Class Athena due to its extremely long service life and reputation for having a very refit friendly design.

To say that the designers of the Ajax had simply slapped on a duplicate set of transit drives to the Aegis structure would have been an oversimplification but it was essentially the plan that the Aerospace design team adopted for the Ajax.

The only other addition to the design was the inclusion of LRM Turrets to give the warship some dedicated aerospace fighter defenses.

Edit: to more correctly reflect Drakensis' vision and to fix the fighter compliment and cargo capacity.
