The Inner Sphere
The history of the Inner Sphere is written in names like Marik, Liao, Kurita, Steiner, and Davion. Those Great Houses, and the star nations they control, are the factions that keep the near-constant warfare of the BattleTech universe going. For centuries, these Successor States — each squabbling to succeed the Star League — have fought, negotiated, betrayed, and fought again.
House Steiner, the merchant princes of the Lyran Commonwealth, beset by betrayal from within and the Clans from without.
House Marik, ruling family of the Free Worlds League, struggling to contain a fractious Parliament and the loss of so many worlds to Clan Wolf.
House Davion, lords to ambitious nobles and powerful generals, still rebuilding from the body blow of the Kuritan invasion just ended.
House Liao, always a study in extremes, learning how far a reach the military they’ve spent a century building can give them.
And House Kurita, lords of samurai, finding a balance between disastrous invasions and desperate defenses — a realm of honor and calculated cruelty in equal measure.
These are stories of ambition, politics, and betrayal. Of grand invasions sweeping through other states, only to be undone most often by solitary acts of patriotism and heroism. Of promises made decades or centuries earlier, still being fulfilled.
