About This Path
Why Mercenaries?

In BattleTech, mercenaries are the easiest insertion point for a player or player-group to create their own unit and play it along a campaign. They exist in every realm, at every size, from competent to criminal. They are, in many ways, the universe’s everyman — defined not by birthright or genetic destiny, but by what they can do and who they choose to be.

Storied regiments like the Eridani Light Horse trace their lineage back to the Star League itself, fighting with honor and compassion across centuries of conflict. Hansen’s Roughriders, built out of betrayal, earned a reputation for crack, stalwart service against impossible odds.

The mysterious Wolf’s Dragoons — Clan expats who turned their back on their former masters — became the gold standard for professional mercenary service in the Inner Sphere. Nobody knew where they came from. Everyone knew what they could do.

Even the scrappy Fox Patrol, making a name for themselves in the Hinterlands, or the legendary Gray Death Legion, back from the dead in a new era. The Tomcats. The Illician Lancers. The Lexington Combat Group. Hundreds of named units. Thousands more waiting to be discovered — or created.

These stories are about people who chose this life, who have to live with what that choice costs them, and who occasionally get to be exactly the right person in exactly the right place at exactly the right moment.
